Suffering memory loss after an automobile accident, Sorenson lands in Father Cousteau’s orphanage where eight boys struggle to operate a broken-down powdered egg factory. That is, until Cousteau discovers that Sorenson, at eleven, is an inspired mechanic sent from God.

Working the pits of the 1937 Indianapolis 500, smuggling love notes into the Indiana Women’s Prison, and cracking cryptic codes which arrive from the Far East in crates of cookie jars, Sorenson now has a father and a clutch of brothers who live by the maxim that family is a choice, not a circumstance. But concealed within an errant barrel of powdered eggs, Sorenson uncovers a cache of Japanese weapons bound for French Indochina.

Now, the moral boundaries of family, truth and ruse will be tried, not so much by fact and fiction—as love.
French secret police and the ruthless Shanghai Tong! Who knew pre-war Indianapolis was rife with global intrigue? Not to mention comedy and pathos, and the promise of redemption, transformation, and adoption.

Lon Mirll’s emotionally moving vehicle is literary fiction such as John Irving might have hatched. If you loved The Hotel New Hampshire and The Cider House Rules, you will love The Devilish Ruse of Father Cousteau!
